Meet John B. from Ohio. He’s a lifelong mechanic, a hard-nosed skeptic and a true third-party expert. We asked him to judge the performance of Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil in an extreme test.
Introducing the 20,000-mile oil change
When we shared the idea of a 20,000-mile oil change with John, he wasn’t supportive of such an extended interval. He explained that he regularly uses more conventional oils than synthetics, and favors 5,000- or 6,000-mile oil change intervals. But 20,000 miles between oil changes? He doubted any motor oil could protect any engine for that long. And John knows engines.
For more than 40 years, John honed his automotive expertise by servicing cars of all years, makes and models; he ran his own repair shop for 30 of those 40 years. To this day, he rarely puts his wrenches down – even at home. John proudly maintains the various modern vehicles he uses for work along with several classic muscle cars and trucks.
Pushing a truck to 520,000 miles with the ultimate motor oil
The goal of the test was to determine how the continued use of Mobil 1 Annual Protection oil – at extended oil change intervals – would impact vehicle performance and engine life. A 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was run 500,000 miles with oil changes every 20,000 miles. Then, the truck was put through a severe duty test, simulating 2,500 pounds of towing for the final 20,000 miles.
Test conditions for the Chevy Silverado
Results any mechanic can believe in
After completing the 520,000-mile test, the Silverado’s engine was carefully removed, disassembled and studied. The outstanding performance of Mobil 1™ Annual Protection ultimate full synthetic motor oil was easy to see.
The Silverado’s engine showed few signs of wear or deposits and still appeared to be in excellent operating condition. The breakthrough lubricant technology of Mobil 1 Annual Protection oil delivered optimal performance, provided maximum wear protection and demonstrated exceptional breakdown resistance throughout the 20,000-mile oil change intervals.
