Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is available at Walmart and select auto parts stores. Use our locator tool to see a comprehensive list of retailers that carry Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil.
  • My car doesn’t require synthetic motor oil. Can I switch from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil?

Switching from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is perfectly acceptable. Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is compatible with conventional oils, high mileage oils, synthetic blends and other full synthetic oils. Engine flushing is not required.
  • Will I void my manufacturer's warranty if I exceed the oil change interval recommended in my owner’s manual or by my vehicle’s oil life monitor?

Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil has been tested and proven to provide outstanding performance and engine protection for one year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, to help ensure continuation of your manufacturer’s new car warranty while using Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil, we recommend the following:

    • If your vehicle is covered by a warranty, follow the vehicle’s oil life monitor or the oil change interval recommended in your owner’s manual to avoid a disruption in your vehicle warranty.
    • Follow the oil change interval in your owner’s manual if your vehicle is operated in any of the following severe service conditions: racing or commercial applications including taxis, limousines, etc.; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or under excessive idling conditions.
  • Should I change my oil if the change oil indicator light comes on before reaching one year or 20,000 miles?

Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil has been tested and proven to protect for one full year or 20,000 miles between changes, whichever comes first. However, we recommend changing your oil based on your owner’s manual recommendation or when your change oil indicator light comes on:

    1. If your vehicle is under a manufacturer’s warranty, follow the recommendation in the owner’s manual or oil life monitor.
    2. If your vehicle is operated in severe service conditions: racing or commercial applications including taxis, limousines, etc.; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or under excessive idling conditions.
  • Can I adjust my change oil light to one year or 20,000 miles?

Most change oil lights are programmed by car manufacturers based on a specified number of miles or an algorithm that estimates when your engine is ready for an oil change. In either case, it is very unlikely that you will be able to change this program.

However, you can establish your own system for tracking when you have reached one year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. Placing a static cling oil change sticker on your windshield, indicating both the date of your last oil change and the mileage, can help you keep track of when your next oil change is due. Also, using one of your vehicle’s tripometers to track the mileage since your last oil change can be helpful.

If you adopt your own oil change tracking system, you may want to consider resetting your change oil light to avoid confusion. We suggest checking your owner’s manual or contacting your car dealer/installer to learn how to reset your change oil light.

  • I’ve never extended my oil change interval before. What do I need to know?

    1. Check to see if your vehicle is a good candidate for extended oil change intervals by considering the following:

    2. • If your vehicle is covered by a new car warranty, follow the oil change interval recommended in your owner’s manual to avoid a disruption in your warranty.
      • Follow the oil change interval in your owner’s manual if your vehicle is operated in any of the following severe service conditions: racing or commercial applications including taxis, limousines, etc.; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or under excessive idling conditions.

    3. Check your oil level frequently to ensure it’s at the proper level. Add oil if necessary.
    4. The Mobil 1™ Extended Performance oil filter is recommended for extended oil change intervals and meets the requirements of the Mobil 1™ Annual Protection limited warranty. When extending oil change intervals beyond your car manufacturer’s recommendation, always use a high-quality oil filter designed for your intended oil change interval.
    5. Regular vehicle maintenance is important to keep your vehicle performing safely and reliably. Learn more about important car maintenance tips.

  • Do I have to use the Mobil 1™ Extended Performance oil filter with Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil for my engine to be covered under the limited warranty?

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter is recommended for extended oil change intervals and meets the requirements of the Mobil 1 Annual Protection limited warranty. However, use of the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter is not a requirement of the Mobil 1 Annual Protection limited warranty. When extending oil change intervals beyond your car manufacturer’s recommendation, use a high-quality oil filter designed for your intended oil change interval.
  • Will I need to add any oil to my vehicle during my one-year Mobil 1™ Annual Protection oil change? Do I have to monitor my oil level or add Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil during the extended oil change interval?

Regular maintenance cannot be ignored while using Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil, including checking your vehicle’s oil level regularly and adding oil if necessary. While Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil provides excellent protection against oil burn-off, your vehicle’s oil consumption is primarily a function of the engine design. Some engines use more oil than other engines. Check your engine oil level regularly to ensure that your engine has the proper amount and add if necessary.

A best practice is to use the same oil (brand/type/viscosity) for top-offs as what is currently in your engine. While Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is compatible with other oils, mixing oils may reduce the effectiveness of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil and is not recommended.

  • Does Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil meet the latest industry specifications?

All viscosities of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil meet or exceed the requirements of the latest industry specifications (ILSAC GF-5, API SN). Additionally, Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is approved by General Motors dexos1™. For a full list of industry specifications and car builder approvals, see the Mobil 1 Annual Protection product data sheet.
  • Why should I consider using Mobil 1™ Extended Performance?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a synthetic oil designed to keep your engine running like new even during today’s longer service intervals. With Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic motor oil, you get proven protection up to 15,000 miles, guaranteed. It’s our most advanced full synthetic formulation and offers outstanding all-around protection that outperforms our conventional oils, synthetic blends and regular full synthetic motor oils.
  • What is the difference between Mobil 1™ Extended Performance and Mobil 1™?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance has an even more robust formula that has been proven in extensive field tests to help protect critical engine parts for 15,000 miles between oil changes – guaranteed. We’ve selected specific synthetic components to deliver this outstanding level of performance.
  • If Mobil 1™ Extended Performance is recommended for 15,000-mile intervals, what’s the maximum limit to which it can be pushed? In other words, if a driver goes an extra 1,000 miles or so, is he going to damage his engine?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic oil is recommended for oil change intervals up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever occurs first. However, if your vehicle manufacturer recommends an oil change interval beyond 15,000 miles and Mobil 1 Extended Performance meets the performance level specified, you can be assured that Mobil 1 Extended Performance will go the distance.
  • Do I need to flush my engine before switching to Mobil 1™ Extended Performance synthetic oil?

You do not need to flush your engine prior to changing to Mobil 1 Extended Performance.
  • Does Mobil 1™ Extended Performance synthetic oil meet GF-5 specifications?

All viscosities of Mobil 1™ Extended Performance meet GF-5. Additionally, they meet or exceed the requirements of various ACEA (European) specifications.
  • Upon what driving conditions are these performance claims based? Normal or severe driving conditions?

These claims relate to all typical consumer driving conditions, excluding those mentioned below. In other words, if you drive under normal conditions and use Mobil 1™ Extended Performance synthetic oil in your vehicle, the oil is guaranteed to protect your engine for 15,000 miles. We also recommend that drivers consult their owner’s manual while their vehicle is under warranty, and follow the guidelines set forth there. Additionally, we recommend that if consumers drive routinely in severe conditions that they follow the oil change interval recommended in their owner's manual for severe conditions. We define "severe conditions" as:

    • Racing or commercial applications
    • Frequent towing or hauling
    • Extremely dusty or dirty conditions
  • What makes Mobil 1™ superior to our conventional motor oil?

First, the performance of Mobil 1™ is more robust, especially in terms of low-temperature pumping and flow. High-temperature stability leading to protection against deposits is also superior. These attributes translate into less engine wear, which helps keep your engine running like new, and a long engine life. Conventional oils lack the performance of synthetic motor oils in the areas of low-temperature performance and high-temperature oxidation stability. Mineral base stocks used in conventional motor oils also contain significantly more impurities, such as aromatics and other undesirable contaminants that cannot be completely removed by conventional refining of crude oil.
  • Is it okay to mix conventional motor oil with Mobil 1™ motor oil?

Yes. Mobil 1 is fully compatible with conventional motor oils, semi-synthetic motor oils and other synthetic motor oils, should it be necessary to mix them. But the superior performance of Mobil 1 will be reduced by diluting it.
  • Will the use of Mobil 1™ void my new-car warranty?

With the exception of the Mazda rotary engine (Mazda does not recommend any synthetic oils), Mobil 1 will not void new-car warranties where an American Petroleum Institute (API) certified oil is recommended. Mobil 1 meets or exceeds API and International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) motor oil service requirements of all new-car manufacturers, both import and domestic. If in doubt, always check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Is it true that new engines need break-in periods using conventional motor oil?

That is a myth. In the past, engine break-in was necessary to remove metal flashing or any other abrasive material left inside the engine after machining, as well as to allow the valves and rings to "seat" properly. Today's engines are built with much tighter tolerances and much improved machining, and under much cleaner conditions compared to the engines of 10 or 20 years ago. Current engine manufacturing technology does not require a break-in period using petroleum-based motor oils.
