Most change oil lights are programmed by car manufacturers based on a specified number of miles or an algorithm that estimates when your engine is ready for an oil change. In either case, it is very unlikely that you will be able to change this program.
However, you can establish your own system for tracking when you have reached one year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. Placing a static cling oil change sticker on your windshield, indicating both the date of your last oil change and the mileage, can help you keep track of when your next oil change is due. Also, using one of your vehicle’s tripometers to track the mileage since your last oil change can be helpful.
If you adopt your own oil change tracking system, you may want to consider resetting your change oil light to avoid confusion. We suggest checking your owner’s manual or contacting your car dealer/installer to learn how to reset your change oil light.
