  • Where can I purchase Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil?

Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is available at Walmart and select auto parts stores. Use our locator tool to see a comprehensive list of retailers that carry Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil.
  • My car doesn’t require synthetic motor oil. Can I switch from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil?

Switching from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is perfectly acceptable. Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is compatible with conventional oils, oils for high mileage vehicles, synthetic blends and other full synthetic oils. Engine flushing is not required. However if your vehicle has a higher-mileage engine that has never used synthetic motor oil, or one that has been poorly maintained with infrequent oil changes, we recommend easing into extended drains to allow Mobil 1 to clean up the engine. In these cases you should still follow the same basic oil-change procedures (drain the old oil, remove the old oil filter, put in new Mobil 1 motor oil and put on a new oil filter). Follow your OEM’s recommended maintenance practices regarding oil changes, but you should follow more frequent (one or two non-extended drain) oil changes when first switching to synthetic oil. The reasoning behind these shortened oil drain intervals is that a high-mileage engine, or one that has had a lack of maintenance (including infrequent oil changes), will likely have a considerable buildup of sludge and deposits. Mobil 1 motor oil will help clean the engine as you drive, but it will have to work much harder in a very “dirty” engine and so it is best to change the oil more frequently for those first several thousand miles. After that, you can rest assured that Mobil 1 synthetic oil is continuing to keep your engine running clean and well lubricated for mile after mile.
  • Will I void my manufacturer's warranty if I exceed the oil change interval recommended in my owner’s manual or by my vehicle’s oil life monitor?

Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil has been tested and proven to provide outstanding performance and engine protection for one year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, to help ensure continuation of your manufacturer’s new car warranty while using Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil, we recommend the following:

    • If your vehicle is covered by a warranty, follow the vehicle’s oil life monitor or the oil change interval recommended in your owner’s manual to avoid a disruption in your vehicle warranty.
    • Follow the oil change interval in your owner’s manual if your vehicle is operated in any of the following severe service conditions: racing or commercial applications including taxis, limousines, etc.; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or under excessive idling conditions.
  • Should I change my oil if the change oil indicator light comes on before reaching one year or 20,000 miles?

Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil has been tested and proven to protect for one full year or 20,000 miles between changes, whichever comes first. However, we recommend changing your oil based on your owner’s manual recommendation or when your change oil indicator light comes on:

    1. If your vehicle is under a manufacturer’s warranty, follow the recommendation in the owner’s manual or oil life monitor.
    2. If your vehicle is operated in severe service conditions: racing or commercial applications including taxis, limousines, etc.; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or under excessive idling conditions.
  • Can I adjust my change oil light to one year or 20,000 miles?

Most change oil lights are programmed by car manufacturers based on a specified number of miles or an algorithm that estimates when your engine is ready for an oil change. In either case, it is very unlikely that you will be able to change this program.

However, you can establish your own system for tracking when you have reached one year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. Placing a static cling oil change sticker on your windshield, indicating both the date of your last oil change and the mileage, can help you keep track of when your next oil change is due. Also, using one of your vehicle’s tripometers to track the mileage since your last oil change can be helpful.

If you adopt your own oil change tracking system, you may want to consider resetting your change oil light to avoid confusion. We suggest checking your owner’s manual or contacting your car dealer/installer to learn how to reset your change oil light.

  • When using Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil, will my engine burn any oil during the 20,000-mile oil change interval? Will I need to add oil?

All engines burn oil. The amount of oil that your car’s engine burns is primarily a function of the engine design. This means that even if you use an extended life motor oil, such as Mobil 1 Annual Protection, your engine will still burn oil over time.

To protect your engine during extended oil change intervals, it is extremely important that you check your oil level frequently and add oil when needed, at least once per month or every 1,000 miles, whichever comes first. Remember, when your engine operates on a low oil level, a smaller amount of oil than the engine is designed to run on must work harder to adequately lubricate your engine.

  • Why did my oil change light go on significantly below the 20,000-mile oil change interval promised by Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil?

The “Change Oil” light is programmed by auto manufacturers based on the minimum acceptable oil quality required for your vehicle’s engine. The “Change Oil” light cannot detect or adjust its program when you use Mobil 1 Annual Protection, a motor oil formulated and proven to protect beyond auto manufacturers’ recommended oil change intervals. As a result, the “Change Oil” light will likely go on well before 20,000 miles or one year when using Mobil 1 Annual Protection oil.

When extending oil change intervals, it is extremely important that you check your oil level frequently and add oil when needed, at least once per month or every 1,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  • I’ve never extended my oil change interval before. What do I need to know?

    1. Check to see if your vehicle is a good candidate for extended oil change intervals by considering the following:

    2. • If your vehicle is covered by a new car warranty, follow the oil change interval recommended in your owner’s manual to avoid a disruption in your warranty.
      • Follow the oil change interval in your owner’s manual if your vehicle is operated in any of the following severe service conditions: racing or commercial applications including taxis, limousines, etc.; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or under excessive idling conditions.

    3. Check your oil level frequently to ensure it’s at the proper level. Add oil if necessary.
    4. The Mobil 1™ Extended Performance oil filter is recommended for extended oil change intervals and meets the requirements of the Mobil 1™ Annual Protection limited warranty. When extending oil change intervals beyond your car manufacturer’s recommendation, always use a high-quality oil filter designed for your intended oil change interval.

  • Do I have to use the Mobil 1™ Extended Performance oil filter with Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil for my engine to be covered under the limited warranty?

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter is recommended for extended oil change intervals and meets the requirements of the Mobil 1 Annual Protection limited warranty. However, use of the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter is not a requirement of the Mobil 1 Annual Protection limited warranty. When extending oil change intervals beyond your car manufacturer’s recommendation, use a high-quality oil filter designed for your intended oil change interval.
  • Will I need to add any oil to my vehicle during my one-year Mobil 1™ Annual Protection oil change? Do I have to monitor my oil level or add Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil during the extended oil change interval?

Regular maintenance cannot be ignored while using Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil, including checking your vehicle’s oil level regularly and adding oil if necessary. While Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil provides excellent protection against oil burn-off, your vehicle’s oil consumption is primarily a function of the engine design. Some engines use more oil than other engines. Check your engine oil level regularly to ensure that your engine has the proper amount and add if necessary.

A best practice is to use the same oil (brand/type/viscosity) for top-offs as what is currently in your engine. While Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is compatible with other oils, mixing oils may reduce the effectiveness of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil and is not recommended.

  • Does Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil meet the latest industry specifications?

All viscosities of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil meet or exceed the requirements of the latest industry specifications (ILSAC GF-5, API SN). Additionally, Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil is approved by General Motors dexos1™. For a full list of industry specifications and car builder approvals, see the Mobil 1 Annual Protection product data sheet.
